Program Description

This program prepares students for office positions in which the primary duties are performing general legal office work; greeting, scheduling and routing legal clients; and answering the telephone. After completing this program, students may choose to take additional courses for an advanced certificate or degree in the Legal Administrative Assistant program.  A minimum grade of 2.5 in each class is required for a certificate.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of current law office procedures and techniques.
  2. Operate office equipment such as computers, electronic calculators, facsimiles, telephones and photocopiers.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of legal terms.
  4. Apply basic knowledge of grammar and punctuation skills.
  5. Select proper legal forms and complete accurately.
  6. Demonstrate organizational and planning skills.

Career Opportunities

Legal receptionists are employed in the following areas: law offices, state and local government offices, insurance companies, brokerage firms, administrative agencies, and general offices needing receptionist skills.

1Prerequisites for enrollment in this class are keyboarding speed of 40 wpm and BT 165 and 272 with a grade of 2.5 or better, or permission of the program coordinator.
2This course may be substituted with any related course, a combination of courses, or prior office experience approved by the program coordinator.
3BT 272 and LSEC 239 with a 2.5 grade or higher or permission of instructor.
