Program Description

This program prepares students for legal office positions where the primary duties are the operation of computer equipment; typing and proofreading manuscripts, tables, reports, correspondence, and other documents from dictating machines or rough drafts; correcting errors in existing documents; and consulting with persons initiating job requests.  A minimum grade of 2.5 in each class is required for a Certificate.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate proficiency with MS Office.
  2. Spell, pronounce and correctly use legal terms.
  3. Create pertinent legal documents.
  4. Operate office equipment, including computers, printers, automatic typewriters, transcribing equipment and copying machines.
  5. Demonstrate language and human relations skills to enhance communications with other law-related offices and courts.
  6. Demonstrate proficiency at advanced level with legal software applications.

Career Opportunities

Legal software specialists are employed in the following areas: law offices, state and local courts, legal departments of banks, contract and mortgage departments of mortgage and insurance companies, and legal departments of private corporations.

2LSEC 239 with a 2.5 grade or higher or permission of the instructor. Use of a personal computer is required for LSEC 216 in order to download and access legal software.
3Prerequisites for enrollment in this class are keyboarding skills of 40 wpm; BT 165 and BT 272 or ENGL& 101 with a grade of 2.5 or higher or permission of instructor.
