Program Description

This certificate offers an overview of healthcare, health information technology, and health information management systems. The focus is on the role and responsibilities of entry-level IT specialists in each phase of the health information management systems lifecycle. The curriculum is aligned to the new CAHIMS (Certified Associate in Healthcare Information and Management Systems) certification administered by HIMSS (Health Information Management Systems Society). This certificate is designed for students who have previous degree or experience in IT or in healthcare and is designed as a career pathway into health IT careers.

Course of Study

There are two tracks: one for health care professionals, and one for IT professionals. Individuals should possess a minimum of a two-year degree and/or current experience in health care, information technology, or both. Registrants are not required to be licensed clinical professionals.

Career Opportunities

Employment opportunities for graduates of approved health information technology programs are excellent. Changing standards and governmental regulations cause the volume and complexity of the health record system to be dynamic and challenging. Types of facilities utilizing health information technology professionals include those providing inpatient care, ambulatory care, long-term care, psychiatric care, cancer registry, and medical insurance providers.
