Program Description
The Fire Science Technology program is designed to prepare students for entry-level careers as firefighters for municipal, industrial, state and federal fire departments. The primary mission of the Fire Science Technology program is identification and mitigation of emergencies in order to preserve life and property.
A 2.0 grade or better must be maintained in all courses required for a degree.
Graduation Requirements:
- Emergency Medical Technician-Basic. EMT is a condition of graduation and must be obtained by the seventh quarter. This can be accomplished by taking EMS 128 and EMS 129 or by providing proof of completion from an outside agency. EMT completion must be submitted with petition to graduate.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Have a thorough knowledge of the Civil Service Examination process.
- Handle basic fire fighter and rescue responsibilities and become IFSAC certified.
- Have a keen awareness of fire and safety problems relative to property loss.
- Have a well-rounded technical background for entry into fire service or rescue related fields.
The duties of the firefighter include, but are not limited to, extinguishing and controlling fires, performing rescue and evacuation work incidental to fire control, accidents, natural disasters, and other incidents where human life is threatened. Firefighters also render emergency aid to those in need. The responsibilities of fire prevention, inspection, and public relation programs aimed at reducing death and property loss are also undertaken.
Career Opportunities
Increasing demands for better private, municipal and governmental involvement in fire prevention and suppression fields, and the implementation of more career fire departments in formerly volunteer-protected areas, will provide an increase in the demand for entry-level fire fighters.
POTENTIAL POSITIONS INCLUDE: Fire fighter, rescue worker, fire loss investigator, fire prevention technician, fire systems technician, fire equipment operator, dispatcher.
