Program Description
This program prepares individuals for employment in medical offices. Spokane is a major regional center for medical care offering many opportunities for employment. Positions are available in medical clinics, medical insurance companies and private physicians' offices.Admission Requirements:
Keyboarding Skills: 40 wpm with six or fewer errors completed at the SCC testing center or successful completion in BT 106, current first aid/CPR card or successful completion of EMS 120 or equivalent.
Students must complete all classes with a 2.0 grade or higher.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Appropriately manage telephone communications and schedule office, surgical, and diagnostic procedures.
- Receive patients and visitors.
- Apply legal and ethical standards.
- Create and maintain patient records; sort and disperse incoming mail.
- File, rebill, and troubleshoot insurance claims for the medical office to include government, PPO, and HMO insurance.
- Code using the CPT and ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM coding systems.
- Perform typical medical office financial activities using applicable software.
- Correlate knowledge of general anatomy and terminology to perform coding and billing tasks.
- Transcribe medical correspondence and reports.
- Perform administrative medical assisting duties.
- Apply concepts of disease transmission/prevention, asepsis, sterilization, drug therapy, pharmacology.
- Apply CPR and Basic First Aid procedures.
- Perform computer applications.
Career Opportunities
Health services are rapidly expanding to keep pace with the growing population, and opportunities for medical office specialists are expected to increase. Physicians in private practice and in all kinds of health organizations will need qualified medical office specialists. Preventive medicine and medical specialization rely on extensive and careful notes and records.
