Program Description
Only offered at the Airway Heights Corrections Center.This program provides a common core of courses that all students enroll in before entering the job-specific coursework. The knowledge and skills gained through this program are those required for entry-level positions as aerospace composite technicians. The certificate also provides an opportunity for existing aircraft mechanics and service technicians to expand their education in the field of composite assembly and repair. Courses in this certificate are not FAA approved.
Students in the Aerospace Composite Technician program may transfer into either an A.A.S. degree or certificate program listed below:
- Aviation Maintenance Technology
- Airframe Maintenance
- General Aircraft/Powerplant Maintenance
- Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CAD)
- Electronics Engineering Technician-Avionics
- Electrical Maintenance and Automation
- Machinist-Computer Numerical Control (CNC)
- Mechanical Engineering Technology
- Hydraulic and Pneumatic Automation Technology
Program Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate applied math skills including estimates and rounding, use of calculators, measurement systems, practical tech applications, consumer math and problem solving.
- Interpret and generate blueprints including symbols, dimensions, freehand sketches, and freehand vertical and inclined lettering.
- Demonstrate proper operation of a CNC mill and CNC lathe, identify CNC tools, and apply the properties of various metals and non-metals in cutting problems.
- Identify composite benefits, limitations, materials, inspection, repair procedures, and safety.
- Identify and demonstrate CAD terminology, equipment, concepts, and produce 2D drawings.
- Understand bonded assembly techniques, identify composite materials, perform bonded assemblies, and follow safe procedures.
- Identify and demonstrate knowledge of manufacturing standards, inspectional tools, manufacturing problems, and materials safety and controls.
- Perform onsite tasks related to composites in an industry setting.
Career Opportunities
Composite manufacturing technology skills are in demand by companies that manufacture components for use in aerospace, marine, and land vehicles as well as recreational products and medical prosthetics. The aerospace industry hires many with composite manufacturing skills, and predicts they will see significant increases in employment capacity over the next few years.Potential positions include: assemblers and fabricators (In Demand*), team assemblers (In Demand*), helpers-production workers, fiberglass laminators and fabricators, first-line supervisors/managers of production and operating workers.
